Penny Swift and Stephanie Nantell - Education Through Music: Transforming Schools with Music Education. This is episode 425 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Today, I’m talking with Penny Swift and Stephanie Nantell about Education Through Music which is focused on...Transforming Schools with Music Education.
A little about Penny and Stephanie…
Penny Swift is the former Executive Director of ETM. She joined Education Through Music in 2017 as the inaugural Chief Operation Officer. Penny has had an extensive career as an operational and strategic leader in early childhood education. Her career began in the service of under-resourced communities as a teacher and a special education administrator. As a lifelong advocate for equality and excellence in childhood education, Penny’s experience led her to senior leadership roles overseeing early childhood centers. She recently served as the Divisional Vice President at Brightside Academy, overseeing all early-childhood academies in New York and Philadelphia.
Penny is a lifelong New Yorker and a proud alumna of New York City’s public schools. She graduated cum laude with a master’s degree in special education and a professional diploma in educational administration from the City College of New York.
Stephanie Nantell serves as Assistant Program Director. Stephanie joins Education Through Music directly after teaching elementary music in NYC public and charter schools. She has two Masters from NYU, a Master of Arts in Music Education, and a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance. While at NYU, Stephanie taught as a private trumpet instructor for NYU undergraduates (non-music majors), tutored with America Reads, and worked as a digitization assistant in the archives department of the New York Philharmonic. Since graduating from NYU, Stephanie has pursued her Level I (Kodály) and II (Orff) Methodologies Certifications and used those skills as a Kodály Musicianship Instructor with the National Children’s Choir. Stephanie also has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Rollins College, where her primary instruments were voice and trumpet. While living in Orlando, Stephanie worked as a trumpet player at Walt Disney World and performed in local elementary schools in a show about positive character traits for Radio Disney.

Harold Phifer - Surviving Chaos: How I Found Peace at a Beach Bar - 423

Harold Phifer talks with me about his memoir - Surviving Chaos: How I Found Peace at a Beach Bar. This is episode 423 of the audio podcast Teaching Learning Leading K12.
Harold Phifer was living a life that he was hiding from everyone—including himself. Then he met a woman at a bar in Thailand who cracked that secret open. Finally listened to, and guided by the stranger’s on-target, thoughtful questions, Harold spoke for the first time of his near-death experience in Afghanistan while flashing back to his dysfunctional past.
His inspiring memoir, Surviving Chaos: How I Found Peace At A Beach Bar. does not shy away from the stark details of childhood bullying, family tension, being raised in poverty in 1960s Mississippi, a mother with schizophrenia, and feeling like an outsider even at home.
Having spent the past decade in Iraq and Afghanistan as a contractor (air-controller), he survived a suicide bombing by the Taliban but feels more at peace amidst the war zone than he did during his shattered childhood.
Harold Phifer started his literary career with a single book, SLEEPWALKING OUT OF AFGHANISTAN, in 2018. He followed that with an updated, largely expanded memoir, SURVIVING CHAOS: How I Found Peace at a Beach Bar, and he has an upcoming book FOOL ME THRICE, under the pen name - Dean Conan.
Harold was born and raised by a single mom in Columbus, Mississippi. He attended Caldwell High School before graduating from Mississippi State and Jackson State Universities respectively. He built his career as an Air Traffic Controller with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for 23 years. After deciding to leave the FAA he started a second career as an International Contractor.
As a contractor he had numerous tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Today we are talking about his memoir - Surviving Chaos: How I Found Peace at a Beach Bar.
Thanks for listening!
