Susie Harder talks with me about helping kids who stutter, providing assistance for Central California Creek Fire Families, and the Junior Author's Program. This is episode 348 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. By the way make sure that you listen to the end to hear where to go to get your gift for listening.
Susie Harder, M.A., CCC-SLP is an experienced clinician who devotes much of her passion to working with children who stutter. She works in private practice and the school setting to help support children and provides workshops and consulting-based support to school districts across California.
Susie has a history of designing and building successful programs. During her time in Fresno Unified School District (2011-2015), Susie designed and piloted a framework for 100 elementary schools, where specialty services successfully reduced student speech therapy time up to 5 years.
Most recently (2020), when the Central California Creek Fire started and children from her hometown lost their homes, Susie started brainstorming how to best support these kids. When she couldn’t find enough resources, she simply decided to create it. Within a week, she had written a children’s book themed around what these kids had just experienced, found an editor, taken a course on children’s books, and started looking internationally to find the best illustrator. Her child development skills guided her toward sharing this inspirational knowledge with kids.
The Junior Author’s Program engages students from around the world in collaboratively writing a children’s book which will be sold to raise funds for families that lost their homes in the California Creek fire. Not only does it help students participate in a meaningful project, but the storyline of the book itself is written to help children heal and process their experience of losing their home in the fire.
Thus, she created a unique platform to reinvent how children connect with literacy and books. Through the Junior Author's Program, children across the world vote to decide characters, setting, and story details of a book as it’s being created. Children get to see behind-the-scenes and connect with her through fun video posts and “Ask The Author Live” events, and are empowered by contributing to the content of the book from rough draft to published book on Amazon!
Susie is full of positive energy, encouragement, and is an invaluable resource for anyone she works with.

John Abrams is a performer and entertainer. Today we are talking about Magic, his School of Astonishment, the impact of the Pandemic on his magic business, and he shares with us some ways to make Video Engaging. Love this episode!!! Had so much fun! Wait till you hear John amaze me with an AWESOME bit of magic! This is episode 347 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Today, I am talking with John Abrams...according to John…
It's always been my goal to help principals, teachers and staff build healthy students at the Elementary School level.
My name is John Abrams. I have (had) some of the Top School Assemblies in the country (The Bully Game and Random Acts of Character) performing around 400 shows a year. – See www.AmazingSchoolAssemblies.com
On March 12, 2020 - I started receiving emails cancelling shows. It continued for the next few days. All shows were cancelled. Because of COVID, I lost around $100,000 this year alone.
In April, I started teaching social skills to kids through magic and doing socially distanced shows. Not nearly as lucrative.
I was sad and depressed for a couple of months. Could barely get out of bed. In July, my Mom was nice enough to offer her house. I moved.
On October 15th, I had an epiphany. This is it: "Performing live, I can only affect students in the Southern California Area (or a little tour here or there). But On-Line I can affect students all over the country! All over the world (in English speaking countries)"
But none of my assemblies fit this new COVID world. All were built on content (certainly transferable) and student participation (Not transferable). I spent the last 25 years figuring out how students could be involved ON STAGE. And now, none of that would work.
I re-branded and immediately started working on a brand-new STEM/STEAM program. But not a stage version, a slick On-Line version. Content first. Entertainment next. I enlisted some of the top minds around the country to help create it.
Now, with new assemblies on the horizon, and teaching kids social skills through magic, I'm ready to help schools around the world! – See www.SchoolofAstonishment.com
Teachers and Principals can pivot too. Yes, COVID changed everything about how we teach. But we're smart. We can innovate and make sure our students flourish!
Talking with John was a blast!!! He was amazing!
I still can't believe the magic trick he did for me!!!! WOW!
Lots to learn.
Have fun!

N.L. Holmes: Writing Historical Fiction - The Empire at Twilight series & The Lord Hani Mysteries. This is episode 346 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
N.L. Holmes is a prolific novelist embarking on another significant career phase. Prior to taking up the power of writing and using this pen name, she was an accomplished archaeologist and teacher for 25 years. Early in her career she served as a nun for two decades. In between she was an artist and antiques dealer. Yes, she has lived an interesting life and the sum of her experiences informs and inspires her writings today.
Holmes, who earned her doctorate in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Studies from Bryn Mawr College despite an offer to attend Princeton, has excavated in Greece and Israel, and taught ancient history and humanities at Stockton University in N.J. and University of South Florida for many years. She also did archaeological artwork for excavations from Lebanon.
With seven published novels, Holmes is the creator of The Lord Hani Mysteries. The inspiration for her Bronze Age novels came with an assignment she gave to her students one day: Here are the only documents we have telling us about royal divorce in Ugarit in the 13th century. How much can we say about what happened? She notes: “It quickly became apparent that almost anything we might come up with was as much fiction as historiography!”
She also penned The Empire At Twilight series, historical fiction set in the 13th century C.B. during the Hittite Empire.
Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, she attended The University of Texas in the honors program but dropped out midway to enter into the antiques business. Two years later, she entered the Discalced Carmelite convent in Texas. She left the convent 20 years later and returned to school to get her B.A. in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology.
Holmes resides with her husband, three cats, and a dog. They split their time between Tampa, Florida and northern France, where she gardens, weaves, and plays the violin. They have an adult son.
Awesome conversation!

Graham Glass: Cypher Learning, NEO the learning management system, and the usefulness of edtech during the pandemic. This is episode 345 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
It all started with a young boy named Graham Glass who had a tremendous passion for education. Growing up in the U.K., Graham was lucky to attend schools where he encountered some great teachers. He enjoyed going to school and learning new things. He even thought of choosing teaching as a career.
Later on, after finishing university, Graham became a teacher and was a senior lecturer at the University of Texas, where he taught Computer Science. He gained a good reputation for his teaching skills at UTD, and was soon getting offers to teach the same materials at local high-tech companies. Back in those days, Learning Management Systems (LMS) did not exist to help facilitate teaching and engage young learners with their studies. Even then, he was wondering why isn’t there a way to package his instruction materials in a scalable way and make it available to millions of people.
Graham built his first company based on his teaching experience and ventured on to corporate training and software products. He founded two more companies related to computer tech and training, but his passion has always remained teaching and education. Even though he spent most of his career in the enterprise software space, there has always been a significant educational component, whether it was teaching at University, writing books, teaching in corporations, or explaining complex topics at seminars.
That's why in 2009 he decided to go back to his educational roots by starting a new company called EDU 2.0. The company focused on something that was very close to Graham's heart, which was improving education through an innovative e-learning platform. His mission was to provide a better way of facilitating teaching and learning and have a bigger impact on the way people learn.
Graham is the CEO of Cypher Learning. Join us as we talk about Cypher Learning, the NEO Learning Management System, and the usefulness of edtech during the pandemic.
