Dr. Terrie Young, Amanda Amerson, and Donna McNair talk with me about the IEP process. This is episode 267 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. We started this conversation in episode 246. Please take the time to listen to that episode, as well.
Dr. Terrie Young is the Director of East Central Georgia Learning Resources System where she provides technical assistance and training on special education-related topics to administrators, teachers, and support staff for the ten school districts in the Heart of Georgia RESA Region. Through Dr. Young’s leadership, the East Central Georgia Learning Resources System won the ASPIRE Leadership Award in 2015 for piloting and leading the region in the statewide student-led IEP initiative. Terrie holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and master’s and a specialist degree in special education with an emphasis in behavior disorders. Terrie’s doctorate degree is in elementary and secondary administration. Terrie believes that all students can learn and that it is through effective leadership, and teachers building positive relationships with students that true teaching and learning occur.
Amanda Amerson is a Program Specialist with East Central GLRS, where she provides professional learning on special education-related topics to administrators, teachers and support staff for the ten school districts in the Heart of Georgia RESA Region. Amanda has presented at many state-level conferences and collaborates with multiple state and local agencies to improve outcomes for students with disabilities. She has a master’s degree in special education and has been a special educator for 23 years. Amanda is passionate about education and believes that through collaboration and excellent teaching all students can reach their highest potential.
Donna McNair retired from Washington County Schools in 2010 after 34 years of service as a teacher, school psychologist, and special education director. She has the following degrees: BS in Elementary Education, MEd in Special Education / Learning Disabilities, both from Georgia College; EdS in School Psychology, with additional coursework for certification in Administration from Georgia Southern University. After retirement, Donna provided contracted services with East Central GLRS, and several school systems. She also taught part-time at Georgia College in the Special Education program of the Teacher Education department as well as from 2015-2019 taught full time at Georgia College. Donna is now enjoying lots of “salt air therapy” and more time with grandchildren and her bridge club friends.

Brian Buffington talks with me about Goosechase, A. I., using Google Tools, and new Happy Music. This is episode 266 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast for educators.
Brian Buffington is an EDU pioneer, always sniffing out better ways to increase student engagement and learning through technology. He inspires thousands of teachers, admins, and students in regards to instructional technology strategies, professional media production, and digital living education.
Brian has presented at national, state, and regional conferences, highlighting EdTech and science education. His background includes teaching middle schoolers about science, owning music venues and vintage clothing shops, and writing songs about cheese and “8th Grade Mustaches”.
His most recent endeavors include: “The EdTech Showcase”, a multiple-day event where educator rock stars showcase student-centered creative uses of technology. These showcases are professionally videoed, published, and organized by state standards.
Since 2017, he also broadcasted a cyber safety event on Facebook LIVE, “A Parent’s Guide to Raising Digital Natives”. In 2019, Brian directed and produced “Vape News”, a PSA video series aimed to combat student vaping.
When Brian is not playing with tech, he’s playing House Concerts and singing #happymusicforthemasses. Along with his wife Brooke, he owns a Creative Arts Company, Studio Blue. The Buffingtons reside in Northeast Georgia, where they raise 2 crazy kids and look for adventure.

Patrice M. Bain, Ed.S. is passionate about student success using research-based strategies. As a veteran K–12 teacher, Patrice recently completed more than 25 years teaching social studies at a middle school in Illinois.
Patrice is the only teacher-author of the popular practice guide, Organizing Instruction and Study to Improve Student Learning commissioned by the Institute of Education Sciences. Patrice's teaching approaches have been featured on TV (PBS's NOVA), radio (NPR), popular press, and multiple books.
Ms. Bain frequently presents professional development workshops throughout the United States. She has taught education courses at the graduate level, and she was a finalist for Illinois Teacher of the Year and a Fulbright Scholar in Russia.

Barbara R. Blackburn is the author of Advocacy from A to Z (2018) written with her father Robert Blackburn and Ronald Williamson. Today, Barbara shares what advocacy is, why educators need to pursue it, and how the listeners can get involved. This is episode 264 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast for educators.
Ranked in the Top 30 Global Gurus in Education, Barbara has dedicated her life to raising the level of rigor and motivation for professional educators and students alike. What differentiates Barbara’s books are her easily executable concrete examples based on decades of experience as a teacher, professor, and consultant. Barbara’s dedication to education was inspired in her early years by her parents, Bob and Rose. Her father’s doctorate and lifetime career as a professor taught her the importance of professional training. Her mother’s career as a school secretary shaped Barbara’s appreciation of the effort all staff play in the education of every child.
Barbara has taught early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school students and has served as an educational consultant for three publishing companies. She holds a master’s degree in school administration and was certified as both a teacher and a school principal in North Carolina. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 2006, she received the award for Outstanding Junior Professor at Winthrop University. She recently left her position at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to write and speak full-time.
In addition to speaking at state, national, and international conferences, she also regularly presents workshops for teachers and administrators in elementary, middle, and high schools. Her workshops are lively and engaging and filled with practical information.
