Barbara R. Blackburn joins me today to discuss her book Money for Good Grades and Other Myths About Motivating Kids. This is episode 294 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.

Ranked in the Top 30 Global Gurus in Education, Barbara has dedicated her life to raising the level of rigor and motivation for professional educators and students alike. What differentiates Barbara’s 28 books are her easily executable concrete examples based on decades of experience as a teacher, professor, and consultant. Barbara’s dedication to education was inspired in her early years by her parents, Bob and Rose. Her father’s doctorate and lifetime career as a professor taught her the importance of professional training. Her mother’s career as school secretary shaped Barbara’s appreciation of the effort all staff play in the education of every child.

Barbara has taught early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school students and has served as an educational consultant for three publishing companies. She holds a master’s degree in school administration and was certified as both a teacher and a school principal in North Carolina. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 2006, she received the award for Outstanding Junior Professor at Winthrop University. She recently left her position at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to write and speak full-time.

In addition to speaking at state, national, and international conferences, she also regularly presents workshops for teachers and administrators in elementary, middle, and high schools. Her workshops are lively and engaging and filled with practical information. Her most popular topics include:

  • Rigor is NOT a Four Letter Word
  • Rigorous Schools and Classrooms: Leading the Way
  • Rigorous Assessments
  • Rigor and Differentiation in the Classroom
  • Rigor for Students with Special Needs
  • Motivation + Engagement + Rigor = Student Success

Kathy Almy: Improving Math Instruction and Math Reform - 293

Kathleen_Headshot_500.jpg

Kathleen Almy is the CEO and founder of Almy Educational Consulting. Kathy shares with me her thoughts on better math instruction and math reform. This is episode 293 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.

As math faculty with over 20 years of experience in high school and college classrooms, she brings her love of math and helping students succeed in college to every project she works on.

She led local, state, and national initiatives for over a decade before starting her own consulting group. In her most recent position, she led the Illinois Transitional Math implementation required by a law and affecting over 700 high schools and nearly 50 community colleges.

Prior to that initiative, she worked for nearly a decade to implement a non-STEM pathways alternative to beginning algebra known as Math Literacy for College Students.

Through that work, she traveled the country providing professional development to support faculty with its innovative pedagogy, worked throughout Illinois to change state-level policies that affected acceptance of the course, and co-authored a textbook, Math Lit, to support faculty teaching the course.

She initially learned how to lead and effect change through her work leading her college’s complete developmental math redesign.

She is tenacious, passionate, and committed to improving math for every student with a college math requirement. Considered a thought leader in developmental math reform, math pathways, and transitional math, she has served in national and statewide positions and given numerous talks and keynotes.

Thanks for listening.

For the past 35 years Dana Stahl, M.Ed., an educational consultant, diagnostician, child-parent advocate, and learning specialist, has worked with families, educators, psychologists, and service providers to help identify learning issues in children and to provide the assistance, resources, and guidance needed to address these issues.

Her recently published book, The ABCs of Learning Issues, is critically acclaimed and has been featured in Chicago Parent, L.A. Parent, Midwest Book Review, Education Update Online, and Special Needs Book Review.

Additionally, The ABCs of Learning Issues received the Parent and Teacher Choice Award and  the NAPPA Award (National Parenting Product Awards).

Dana, who struggled from a learning disability, became a learning specialist to assist children with learning issues to find compensatory strategies to reach their social, emotional, and academic potential.  She also provides life coaching and counseling for children with learning disabilities, Autism, ADHD, and Dyslexia, as well as career and vocational counseling.
