Restoring the Shattered is an account of Nancy E. Head’s journey through single-motherhood and poverty. The permanent divide between her and her husband led to a shattering of their family as the children settled into separate camps. The story begins when Nancy and her children have little to eat. Through a miraculous intervention, God provides—and leads them along their way. Other interventions and more guidance came from people of different denominations, illustrating Christ’s love through the larger Church. This is episode 286 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Nancy notes, “I was a single mother with five children under the age of 14. We endured hard days, what I call “the lean years.” Yes, there were programs to help, but in many ways, those programs were designed to make us permanent fixtures in an impersonal system. They were designed to make us stand still in life.”

Kirsten Richert (KEAR-sten RICK-urt) is an innovation expert who works with leaders on transformational efforts. Kirsten teaches Design Thinking, Communication and Innovation at a number of colleges in the greater NYC area. Her teaching draws upon her experience in three core disciplines—business management, ideation methodology, and facilitation.
She received her undergraduate degree in Social Science from Hampshire College, her master’s degree in Social Studies Education from Teachers College at Columbia University, and her training in innovation and facilitation methods from SIT (Systematic Inventive Thinking) and ToP (Technology of Participation).
Formerly Vice President of Product Management and Marketing at Pearson, the world’s leading educational publisher, Kirsten oversaw the creation of breakthrough “digital-first” K-12 curriculum. Trained as a corporate on-call innovation coach, she’s helped teams plan new efforts, generate ideas, and execute on strategies.
Now, as an innovation catalyst, Kirsten guides change efforts for organizations, especially in the areas of education and human development. She is particularly interested in organizations that integrate the arts into their work towards social change, such as the Alliance for Arts and Health New Jersey, Real Beauty: Uncovered, and The Barat Foundation.
Jeff Ikler (EYE-klur) is Director of Quetico Career and Leadership Coaching, a firm dedicated to helping individuals overcome career issues, and leaders develop sustained changes in their leadership practices and organizations. He received his certificate in coaching from the Coach Training Institute, a firm recognized as one of the leading coach-training organizations in the world. His approach blends data-driven coaching, and consulting informed by working for more than 35 years in the corporate world.
Jeff holds a Master’s in the Teaching of History along with a Bachelor’s in History from the University of Illinois. He taught high school history in Maywood and Batavia, Illinois, for seven years. Like Kirsten, he is a certified innovation facilitator using the SIT (Systematic Inventive Thinking) process.
He is a former Executive Vice President at Pearson Learning where he directed the development of text- and technology-based products for all disciplines. He finished his career at Pearson by leading the development of its multi-dimensional Leadership Development program for school administrators, working closely with authors Lyle Kirtman and Michael Fullan. He currently works with Lyle Kirtman to support change in school districts and nonprofit organizations.
Kirsten and Jeff also co-host Getting Unstuck – Shift for impact, a podcast that helps individuals and organizations undertake productive change – change that helps them achieve their desired outcomes and impact.

Jean O’Toole is a scholarship strategist, author and speaker. She has been inspiring and helping high school and college students for the past 15 years. She is also the author of a new book, Scholarship Strategies: Finding and Winning the Money You Need (Morgan James Publishing). This is episode 284 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
She co-founded Connections101 in 2008, creating workshops, seminars, scholarship clubs, and assemblies for students, parents and educators to help empower young people to take a proactive role in their lives. Thousands of students across the country have participated. Her strategies have helped students win thousands of dollars, including some individuals who secured up to $200,000.
She served for six years, starting in 2005, as a speaker for Monster’s Making It Count program. She traveled across the nation, where over 150,000 high school and college students participated.
As a recipient of an academic college scholarship as well as several outside scholarships she was able to attend Wagner College and graduated with a B.S. in Arts Administration in 1987. Although her scholarships were generous it still required her and her family to pay for the remainder of her education with student loans. Knowing that the debt would need to be paid off after receiving her degree, she was focused on positioning herself for immediate employment upon graduation. Her “money mission” focus motivated her to complete six internships while in college and also work part-time jobs.
O’Toole, who is also a certified Journey Dance facilitator, guides moving meditations, and serves as a WW coach, as she is dedicated to helping people design their lives..
Jean, who grew up in Western Massachusetts, resides in Oak Ridge, New Jersey.

Today, Michele McPhee talks to us about her books Maximum Harm (Boston Marathon murders) and Operation Mean Streets (The threat to our schools and communities from the gang MS-13). This is episode 283 of Teaching Learning Leading K12. ( She had just presented at a state principal's conference.)
Best selling author, Emmy-nominated investigative reporter and award-winning journalist Michele McPhee has spent two decades covering terrorism, murder, mobsters, and corruption for television, newspapers and radio.
McPhee’s investigative work has led to gunpoint threats delivered by angry Boston mobsters, a frightening encounter on KKK-protected dirt roads in Arkansas, threats from gang bangers, and IRS audits. She chased Gianni Versace’s killer around South Beach, Miami; snuck into John Gotti’s wake in Queens, New York; and posed as a mob moll with an undercover NYPD detective targeting fight fixing in Las Vegas.
She was also on the ground at the scene of two terror attacks on American soil. McPhee was among the first reporters at Ground Zero when two human-filled bombs hurtled into the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001. She was also a witness to the carnage unleashed by two homegrown terrorists who detonated two pressure cooker bombs secreted in backpacks placed in the crowd along the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013 and is currently at work on a book about the FBI’s involvement with accused bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
McPhee is the author of five true crime books, including A Mob Story the book notorious Boston mobster Whitey Bulger had on his bookshelf at his Santa Monica hideout.
McPhee was the Boston producer for ABC News working in the Brian Ross Investigative Unit and has broken multiple national stories regarding New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez and his murderous past. She was the first reporter in the country to obtain a picture of accused bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s anti-American missive scribbled on the side of a Watertown boat where he hid for hours during a massive police manhunt. She also traveled to Montreal to interview, with Brian Ross, the world’s most sophisticated counterfeiter of US $20 bills and covered the trial of Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger.
McPhee was the Police Bureau Chief for the New York Daily News for nearly a decade and has covered high-profile crime cases nationally and internationally, including the death of Princess Diana.
She has been a commentator on breaking news for national programs on ABC World News, CNN; MSNBC; and the Fox News Network.
She is the recipient of many journalism awards, including the Society of the Silurian’s Feature News Award for her New York Daily News 9-11 coverage. She was awarded First Place for Serious Column in the Boston Herald by the Associated Press. Her work for ABC Boston affiliate WCVB earned her a 2012 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Investigative Reporting.

PRAC-E is made by teachers, for teachers.
PRAC-E has connected with some of Australia’s leading Universities and have also independently run several PRAC-E Symposiums, where a varied panel of educators aim to demystify the profession for beginning teachers in a Q&A format.
PRAC-E also creates regular digital media, such as the #ASKPRAC-ENANYTHING and Teach Hack Challenge video series, as well as the PRAC-E Podcast.
Through this content, PRAC-E has connected with several notable people to spread its message. This exposure includes a primetime story feature on the national ABC News, collaborations with influential teacher media creators, as well as a guest appearance on the Teachers Need Teachers Podcast, and EduMagic podcast in the U.S. PRAC-E’s aim is to support beginning teachers, to create a budding community and to bring an end to the teacher drought.
Bio for Liam D. Auliciems
Liam D. Auliciems is an education entrepreneur, academic researcher, registered teacher and a postgrad Masters student from Australia. After seeing first-hand the dismal state of affairs of beginning teachers across the world, Liam co-founded PRAC-E to help find a solution to the ‘teacher drought’. Liam has had a varied experience during his short time in the teaching profession, from being a Residential Tutor in one of Brisbane’s largest private schools, to volunteering his time to support some of Australia’s lowest socio-economic students. Liam hopes to be an agent of change in the educational sphere, to disrupt the status quo and challenge traditional ideals of pedagogy and student care.
Bio for Scott Harding
Scott Harding has been dubbed the ‘educational all-rounder’ due to his wealth of experience in the teaching profession. Through his 22+ years in the classroom, Scott has had first-hand experience in every type of school you could imagine, from co-ed/single sex, private/public in both his home country of England and Australia. Scott has an undying passion for mentoring beginning teachers and has begun numerous ventures to ‘send the elevator back down’. Scott has a seemingly never-ending supply of poignant anecdotes, practical advice and entertaining stories, all of which carry important lessons for beginning teachers. Scott is currently a senior teacher in one of Brisbane’s quickest moving independent schools, and teaches English and French at the Secondary level.
