Kathy Almy: Improving Math Instruction and Math Reform - 293
Friday May 08, 2020
Friday May 08, 2020
Kathleen Almy is the CEO and founder of Almy Educational Consulting. Kathy shares with me her thoughts on better math instruction and math reform. This is episode 293 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
As math faculty with over 20 years of experience in high school and college classrooms, she brings her love of math and helping students succeed in college to every project she works on.
She led local, state, and national initiatives for over a decade before starting her own consulting group. In her most recent position, she led the Illinois Transitional Math implementation required by a law and affecting over 700 high schools and nearly 50 community colleges.
Prior to that initiative, she worked for nearly a decade to implement a non-STEM pathways alternative to beginning algebra known as Math Literacy for College Students.
Through that work, she traveled the country providing professional development to support faculty with its innovative pedagogy, worked throughout Illinois to change state-level policies that affected acceptance of the course, and co-authored a textbook, Math Lit, to support faculty teaching the course.
She initially learned how to lead and effect change through her work leading her college’s complete developmental math redesign.
She is tenacious, passionate, and committed to improving math for every student with a college math requirement. Considered a thought leader in developmental math reform, math pathways, and transitional math, she has served in national and statewide positions and given numerous talks and keynotes.

Friday Apr 17, 2020
Friday Apr 17, 2020
Today we are talking with Mark D. Bruce about his book - Jackie, a Boy, and a Dog:A Warm Cold War Story. Mark shares his story of being given a puppy from the First Lady Jackie Kennedy in the early 1960's and the continued connection he shared with her. This is episode 290 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Mark grew up with a love for dogs. This became a focal point of Mark’s childhood when the President and Mrs. Kennedy gave him the “pupnik” named Streaker, the grand-pup of Strelka, the first dog to orbit earth in a Soviet Sputnik spaceship, and return alive. Mark maintained a pen-pal relationship with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, with many personal letters, from the 1960’s until the 1980’s.
Mark is an emergency medicine physician in Wisconsin, a husband of 42 years to his wife Moira E. O’Brien-Bruce, DO, and a father and grandfather to 5 children, and 7 grandchildren.
Mark has traveled with the international medical ministry in Central America, Asia, Europe, and Africa, and led many teams into the Asian disaster zones for medical relief work.
In addition to clinical duties, Mark is the Ambassador to Belize and Canada for the American College of Emergency Physicians.
This is such an amazing story!
You are going to love the interview and the book!

Thursday Apr 09, 2020
Karen Gross discusses her article " Schools and Colleges Are Not Light Switches" and her newest book - Trauma Doesn't Stop at the School Door: Strategies and Solutions for Educators, PreK - College (TCPress, June 2020).
Last week in episode 288 Karen talked about her children's story - "Wrinkles Doesn't Like Social distancing and I Don't Blame Him." This week Karen is back to talk about the planning that needs to start now to get ready to reopen our schools and colleges. According to Karen, "Whether institutions reopen sooner rather than later, we need to plan for these reopenings rather than just flipping the switch and expecting we can return to where we were pre-pandemic. Would that it were that simple."
We also spend some time talking about the trauma that adults and students are experiencing now that needs to be considered and addressed because it doesn't just go away and things go back to how they were before. She takes some time to talk about her newest book - Trauma Doesn't Stop at the School Door and how it can help teachers and administrators figure out how to address the needs of their staff, colleagues, peers, friends, and students.
By the way, the publisher TCPress has generously offered a wonderful gift for listeners of this podcast: If you order Karen's book Trauma Doesn't Stop at the School Door and use this code TLL2020 you will get 15% off the book and free shipping. make sure you take advantage of this.
